Waterton Lakes joins Montana's Glacier National Park as the world's first International Peace Park, where the Alberta prairies meet the Rockies at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Cameron Lake and Red Rock Canyon. The Townsite Campground has full hookups. Indie Campers' Calgary depot is about a three-hour drive south.
It’s 270 kilometres from our Calgary depot to the Waterton park gate. That's it. A straight shot. Just three hours of easy highway driving gets you into a landscape so dramatic it barely seems real, and we make sure you have the right vehicle for both the journey and the destination.
The roads in Waterton, like the Akamina and Red Rock Parkways, are well-maintained but can have tight turns and compact car parks at trailheads. A massive Class A rig would be a liability. Our fleet is built for this kind of travel. We recommend models like the Solis or Nomad, which are under 6.71 m. They’re nimble enough for any scenic pull-out but still have all the essentials: a kitchen, a bathroom, and a proper bed. You get unlimited kilometres, so you don't have to worry about adding a side trip to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump on your way down.
Our take: a smaller campervan is always better for national park access.
Waterton isn't a huge park, which is its strength. You can cover the main roads in a day. But a campervan lets you explore them properly, stopping whenever you want. Remember, these aren't highways; they're destinations in themselves.
Akamina Parkway
Key stops: Lineham Falls, Cameron Lake Approx drive time: 30 minutes one-way without stops (16 km) Best time to go: First light. Seriously. The road is famous for bear sightings in the early morning, and you’ll have Cameron Lake almost to yourself. Campervan notes: The road is paved and easy for any campervan. Parking at the Cameron Lake day-use area can get tight by late morning, so arrive early to secure a spot with room to maneuver.
Red Rock Parkway
Key stops: Coppermine Creek, Red Rock Canyon Approx drive time: 25 minutes one-way without stops (14 km) Best time to go: Late afternoon. The setting sun makes the red and green argillite rock of the canyon absolutely glow. It's a photographer's dream. Campervan notes: This road is narrower than Akamina and has a seasonal closure for the annual toad migration in the spring. It's typically closed to vehicles from November to May. The car park at the end is large enough for campervans.
Bison Paddock Loop Road
Key stops: The bison, obviously. Approx drive time: 20 minutes for the loop. Best time to go: Early evening, when the plains bison are most active. Campervan notes: This is a short, gravel loop road just inside the park entrance. It’s perfect for a quick drive-through on your way in or out. Stay in your vehicle. These are wild animals. And they are massive.

This is simple. You must camp in designated campgrounds. Roadside or "wild camping" is strictly prohibited inside the national park boundaries. The good news is that the official options are excellent.
Timing is everything in Waterton. The season completely changes your experience. The park has a very short, intense peak season, but it also has long, quiet shoulder seasons that can be far more rewarding.
Summer (July to August): This is prime time. Everything is open, the weather is warmest (though still unpredictable), and the days are long. It's also the most crowded and expensive period, so you absolutely must book your campsite months in advance. Temperatures range from 10-25 °C.
Autumn (September to October): This is arguably the best time for a campervan trip. The summer crowds are gone. The aspen trees turn a brilliant gold. The wildlife is very active during the elk rut. Some services start to close after Labour Day, but the main roads and campgrounds usually stay open until Canadian Thanksgiving. Be prepared for cooler temperatures and the possibility of an early snowfall.
Spring (May to June): A beautiful, quiet time to visit. Wildflowers carpet the meadows. You'll see plenty of newborn wildlife. However, many trails will still be snow-covered at higher elevations, and the Red Rock Parkway may not open until early June. It’s a gamble on weather, but the reward is solitude.
Booking a spot for your campervan in Waterton requires planning, especially for the peak summer season. Here’s how it breaks down.
Townsite Campground
Crandell Mountain Campground
Yes. Indie Campers’ Calgary depot is about 3 hours (270 km) north, and Waterton pairs with Montana’s Glacier National Park across the border.
Yes — the Townsite Campground has full hookups within walking distance of the village; Crandell Mountain campground offers a quieter no-hookup option.
Waste Disposal / Dump Stations
Your campervan's black and grey water tanks will need emptying. Eventually. The Townsite Campground has a large, modern sani-dump station for registered campers, and you can use it for a fee if you're staying at Crandell or just passing through. This is your only option inside the park. Your next closest options are in Pincher Creek or Cardston. Plan accordingly. Day four is not the time to start wondering where the nearest dump station is.
