Yes, but not everywhere, and not with every company.
One-way hire only work when a hire company owns a network of depots and can absorb the cost of moving vehicles between them. That's why peer-to-peer marketplaces usually decline one-way trips: an individual host has one driveway, and their vehicle needs to come back to it.
Indie Campers runs its own fleet from pick-up locations across three continents, which is what makes one-way trips possible at scale — including cross-border routes in Europe and between the United States and Canada.
Booking a one-way hire with Indie Campers takes the same four steps as a return trip.
1. Choose your pick-up city. Any location in any of our regions — the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
2. Switch on "End in a different location." Our booking system shows you every drop-off location available for those dates and that vehicle. If a route isn't showing, it means no vehicle can make that move on those dates, change the dates and it often opens up.
3. Review your one-way fee. The fee appears in your quote before you pay, alongside the daily rate and any extras. Nothing is added later.
4. Pick up, drive, drop off. Collect your campervan, run your route at your own pace, and hand it back at the location you selected. No return leg.
One-way hire run on Indie Campers' own fleet,Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes and compact campers, because we control where those vehicles need to be. Marketplace vehicles hired from independent hosts are usually return trip only.
Most hire companies won't tell you anything about one-way pricing until you're deep in a booking funnel. Here's how ours works, before you start.
The one-way fee covers the cost of getting the vehicle back into circulation. It isn't a flat surcharge, it's calculated per route, and it moves with supply and demand across our fleet.
What makes the fee higher:
What makes the fee lower — sometimes to nothing:
One-way hire work differently in each region — different distances, different fees, different routes. Pick yours.
This is where one-way trips matter most. American and Canadian distances are big enough that a return leg can cost you three days of holiday and a tank of fuel spent going nowhere new. Coast-to-coast runs, national park loops that finish in a different state, and cross-border routes into Canada.
European locations sit close enough together that one-way trips are often a long weekend rather than an expedition and crossing two or three countries on the way is completely normal. This is the cheapest region in the world to hire one way.
Australia's east coast and New Zealand's two islands are places you drive through, not around. Nobody drives the Great Ocean Road twice. Seasonal fleet movement between the north and south means this is our busiest region for relocation deals.
Yes. Indie Campers offers one-way campervan hire across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Choose your pick-up city, switch on "End in a different location," and the booking system shows every drop-off location available for your dates.
You pay the standard daily rate plus a one-way fee, which is calculated per route and shown in your quote before payment. The fee depends on how far the vehicle ends up from where it's needed and whether we already wanted a vehicle moved in that direction. Relocation routes carry heavily reduced rates.
Three things that are always true:
Exact fees for your route appear in your quote. For what to expect in each region, see the regional pages below.
Yes. Unlimited kilometres are included as standard on Indie Campers one-way bookings, subject to fair use.
Within a region, yes. Cross-border one-way trips are routine in Europe and available between the United States and Canada. Vehicles cannot move between continents.
The hire itself costs more because of the one-way fee. The trip often costs less overall: less fuel, fewer hire days, and no third of your holiday spent driving back.
Yes. Pets are welcome on Indie Campers hire, including one-way trips. Add them during booking so we prepare the vehicle correctly.
No. The same basic protection plan applies as on a return trip, with the same optional upgrades at checkout.
Start in one city. Finish in another. Skip the drive back.
