Great Smoky Mountains is the most-visited US national park, straddling the Tennessee-North Carolina line with misty ridges, Cades Cove wildlife and the Newfound Gap Road climb. There are no hookups in the park; Elkmont, Cades Cove and Smokemont campgrounds take campervans up to about 10.7 m. Indie Campers' Nashville and Atlanta depots are each roughly a 3.5-hour drive.
Your Smokies trip starts hours before you see the first misty ridge. Picking the right vehicle and hire partner is the first step. Our depots in Nashville and Atlanta are both positioned for an easy 3.5-hour drive to the park's main entrances, letting you fly in, pick up your rig, and be setting up camp by evening.
We keep our fleet sized for parks like this. The roads here were built long before 12.2 m motorhomes were common. To fit into the historic, slightly tight loops of campgrounds like Elkmont and Cades Cove, you need a nimble vehicle. Most of our campervans fit comfortably in the 25 to 10.7 m sites common throughout the park. They handle the steep grades of Newfound Gap Road without issue. For the Smokies, we recommend our Standard or Family models for the best balance of maneuverability and comfort.
Most people drive Newfound Gap Road and call it a day. That's a mistake. The park's best experiences are on the scenic drives that branch off the main artery. Here’s how to navigate them in a campervan.
Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 441)
Key stops: Newfound Gap, Oconaluftee Visitor Center, Clingmans Dome Road turnoff Approx drive time: 60-90 minutes without stops for the 49.9 km route Best time to go: Weekday mornings to avoid the worst traffic. Campervan notes: This is the main artery, fully paved and campervan-friendly. It’s a steep climb with plenty of pull-offs for photos. The road to Clingmans Dome is also paved but closes in winter and has a 7.62 m vehicle length recommendation, though larger rigs often make it.
Cades Cove Loop Road
Key stops: John Oliver Cabin, Cades Cove Visitor Center, Abrams Falls trailhead Approx drive time: 2-4 hours for the 17.7 km one-way loop due to traffic. Best time to go: Wednesday mornings (vehicle-free until 10 a.m. May-Sept) or the first hour after sunrise any other day. Campervan notes: It's narrow, paved, and you will be moving at a crawl. There are no pull-offs to let people pass. Commit to the pace. Campervans are fine, but patience is the one essential you can't overpack for Cades Cove.
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
Key stops: Rainbow Falls Trailhead, Place of a Thousand Drips Approx drive time: 1 hour for the 8.85 km one-way loop. Campervan notes: Campervans and trailers are prohibited. This road is extremely narrow with tight turns. Park your rig in Gatlinburg and take a passenger car for this one.
Legal campervan camping in the Smokies is restricted to designated campgrounds. Dispersed camping or overnight parking in pull-offs is not permitted. The park has ten front-country campgrounds, but only a few are suitable for most campervans. Crucially, these are dry-camping sites: none have water or electrical hookups.
Spring (March to May): This is the season of wildflowers. Over 1,500 types of flowering plants bloom here, more than any other North American national park. Temperatures range from cool to warm, but be prepared for rain. Many campgrounds and secondary roads open for the season in April.
Summer (June to August): Peak season. It's warm, humid, and crowded. All facilities are open, and the park is lush and green. Plan to be at trailheads or popular spots by 8 a.m. to get parking. Afternoon thunderstorms are a daily ritual.
Autumn (September to November): This is the park's second peak season, thanks to the spectacular autumn foliage. The show starts at the highest elevations in late September and works its way down. Days are pleasant, and nights are crisp. Book campgrounds months in advance for October.
Winter (December to February): The quietest season. Much of the park is blanketed in snow, and major roads like Newfound Gap Road can close temporarily due to ice. Lower elevation campgrounds like Cades Cove remain open. It’s a peaceful, starkly beautiful time if you're prepared for the cold.
Booking a campsite in the Smokies requires planning, especially for a campervan. All reservations are handled through Recreation.gov and can be made up to six months in advance. For a trip in October, you should be booking in April.
Yes. Indie Campers’ nearest depots are Nashville (about 3.5 hours / 354 km) and Atlanta (about 3.5 hours / 322 km), both easy starting points for a Smokies loop through Gatlinburg or Cherokee.
Elkmont, Cades Cove and Smokemont take campervans (no hookups) with length limits that vary by site (often around 10.7 m). There are dump stations but no electric/water hookups — use a private park in Gatlinburg or Cherokee for full hookups.
Key stops: The “Missing Link” bridge, various scenic overlooks Approx drive time: 45-60 minutes for the 53.1 km western section. Campervan notes: This is a spectacular, modern road outside the main park boundary with sweeping views. It's wide, smooth, and perfect for any size campervan. A great alternative when the main park is jammed.
The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail bans campervans and trailers, and the Cades Cove Loop is narrow and one-way. Newfound Gap Road is steep but paved and campervan-friendly.
Spring for wildflowers and fall for foliage (peak mid-to-late October). Summer and leaf season are very crowded — arrive early and book campgrounds well ahead.
