Great Basin rises from high Nevada desert to 3,982 m Wheeler Peak, with the Lehman Caves, ancient bristlecone pines and some of the darkest night skies in the country. Lower and Upper Lehman, Baker Creek and Wheeler Peak campgrounds take campervans without hookups. Indie Campers' Salt Lake City depot is about 3.5 hours away, Las Vegas about 4.5.

Getting to a remote park like Great Basin requires the right vehicle and support. The drive from our depots in Salt Lake City or Las Vegas is part of the adventure, and our fleet is built for this kind of trip.

Our Salt Lake City depot is the closest. It's just 377 km, or a 3.5-hour drive to the park entrance. Easy. Picking up from our Las Vegas depot is also a popular option, a slightly longer road trip of 476 km that takes around 4.5 hours and lets you see the desert really open up. Both routes are straightforward highway driving, the kind you can do with a good playlist, a full tank of gas, and a bag of petrol station jerky. But for a park like Great Basin, vehicle size is critical. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive has a strict 7.32 m vehicle length restriction beyond the Upper Lehman Creek Campground turnoff. This makes most of our fleet ideal for the job.

We recommend our Compact or Standard size campervans for Great Basin. They are nimble and easy to drive on mountain roads. Crucially, they fall under the 7.32 m limit, giving you full access to the park's main scenic drive. With unlimited kilometres included, you can explore the vast landscapes of Nevada and Utah without constantly checking the odometer. Plus, our 24/7 support means you have peace of mind. Even when you're miles from anywhere.

Great Basin isn't a maze of roads. Far from it. It offers a few focused, dramatic routes that take you from the desert floor straight into the alpine zone. Your campervan is the perfect vehicle for exploring them at your own pace.

Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive

This is the park's main artery. A 19.3 km paved road climbing over 1,219 m. It's a remarkable piece of engineering, with pullouts offering views across the entire basin. The drive itself? About 30 minutes without stops. But you should plan for at least two hours to really take it all in. The road is open seasonally, usually from June through October, depending on snowfall. And remember the key rule. It's a big one. Vehicles over 7.32 m are prohibited beyond the Upper Lehman Campground junction at mile marker 8, forcing you to park larger rigs at the lower visitor centre and explore from there.

Baker Creek Road

This graded gravel road explores the park's southern canyon system. It's usually passable for most campervans when dry. Check conditions first. Always. The road leads to Baker Creek Campground and several trailheads for less-crowded hikes, a 5.63 km drive that offers a completely different perspective on the park's diverse ecosystems as you move through sagebrush, pinyon-juniper woodlands, and aspen groves.

Lehman Caves Road

This short, 3.22 km road leads from Baker to the Lehman Caves Visitor Center. It's the park's main hub. An easy, paved drive accessible to all vehicles. This is your starting point for cave tours, where the visitor centre has exhibits, a gift shop, and rangers ready with the latest road and trail conditions. Arrive here first. Get your bearings. Confirm your tour reservations.

Camping is central to the Great Basin experience. All campgrounds in the park are dry camping only, meaning no water, sewer, or electrical hookups. You must be self-sufficient. A single dump station and potable water fill-up are available seasonally near the Lower Lehman Creek Campground.

• Lower Lehman Creek Campground: Open year-round and the only option in winter. It's situated at 2,225 m in a riparian area along the creek. It’s the most accessible campground and the location of the park’s only campervan dump station.
• Upper Lehman Creek Campground: At 2,377 m, this site is set among aspens and offers more seclusion. It's a great base for exploring the lower sections of the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive. Open seasonally, typically late spring to fall.
• Wheeler Peak Campground: At 3,048 m, this is the prize: one of the highest campgrounds in the national park system. The air is thin, the nights are cold, and the views are spectacular. It’s the starting point for the Bristlecone Pine Trail and the Wheeler Peak summit hike. Campervans are welcome, but the high altitude can affect generator performance.
• Baker Creek Campground: Located on the Baker Creek Road, this campground offers a more rustic experience away from the main scenic drive. It's a good choice if other campgrounds are full. Sites are spread out among pinyon pines and junipers.
• Grey Cliffs Campground: A group camping area that also has a few individual sites. It's located in a more open, sagebrush environment at a lower elevation.

Your experience in Great Basin is entirely dictated by the season. This is especially true with a campervan. The park’s high elevation means winter is long and road access is severely limited.

Summer (July to August): This is peak season. Expect pleasant daytime temperatures in the mountains (70s-80s°F), but be ready for the blowtorch heat on the valley floor, which can hit the 90s and 100s°F. All park roads and facilities are open. Campgrounds fill up fast. Reservations are absolutely essential. This is the best time for hiking at high elevations and attending the fantastic, ranger-led astronomy programs.

Autumn (September to October): Many consider this the best time for a campervan trip. The summer crowds are gone. The fall colours in the aspen groves are spectacular (usually late September). The air is crisp and clear. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive typically remains open until the first significant snowfall, often in mid-to-late October, but the nights get cold, so be prepared to run your campervan's heater.

Spring (May to June): A season of transition. The valley floor is warm and full of wildflowers, but snow can linger at high elevations well into June, keeping the upper scenic drive and Wheeler Peak Campground closed. It's a quieter time to visit, perfect for exploring Lehman Caves and the lower-elevation trails. Call the park for the latest road opening information.

Planning your overnight stays is the most important part of a Great Basin campervan trip. With no hookups available, you need to be prepared for a boondocking-style experience within the developed campgrounds.

Book everything through the federal Recreation.gov website or their mobile app. That's the only way. Sites can be booked up to six months in advance, and they fill up incredibly fast for the peak summer months of July and August. Standard non-electric sites typically cost $20 per night. A few first-come, first-served sites exist, but don't even think about counting on one if you roll in on a Friday afternoon in July.

• Reservations are essential. For Wheeler Peak, Upper Lehman, and Baker Creek campgrounds, book as far in advance as your plans allow. Seriously. Lower Lehman is first-come, first-served in the winter but reservable in the summer.
• Waste Disposal: The park has one campervan dump station. It is located near the entrance to the Lower Lehman Creek Campground and is typically open from late May to October, weather permitting. There is a fee to use it if you are not a registered camper. Potable water is also available here. Plan your water usage carefully. The next closest dump stations are in Ely, Nevada, about 105 km west.
• Generator Hours: No hookups means you'll rely on your campervan's batteries. Need to recharge? You'll have to run a generator, and you must be aware of the strict quiet hours. Generators are generally only permitted from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., but you should always check the specific campground bulletin board for the current rules.
