Glacier National Park is one of the best places in the United States for a classic mountain road trip: dramatic peaks, turquoise lakes, and trailheads that start right off the road. The park is also big, lodging inside the park is limited, and summer availability disappears fast, so having your own campervan makes planning simpler and gives you more freedom day to day.
This page covers the planning details campervan travellers actually need for Glacier, including pick up locations, the most campervan friendly routes, key things to do and hikes, the best time to visit by season, campground options inside and outside the park, dump stations, and the restrictions that can affect your itinerary.
Going to the Sun Road is Glacier’s signature drive, but it is not accessible to many standard campervans and motorhomes.
Vehicle size limits:
- Maximum length: 6.4 m (including bumpers)
- Maximum width: 2.44 m (including mirrors)
- Vehicles longer than 6.4 m or wider than 2.44 m are prohibited between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun
- Vehicles over 3.05 m in height may have difficulty driving west from Logan Pass to the Loop because of rock overhangs
What this means in practice: if your campervan is larger than these limits, plan to park on either side of the corridor and use the free shuttle system to reach Logan Pass, major viewpoints, and popular trailheads.

Two Medicine valley route
Visitor centres and ranger programs are worth adding if you want context on geyser timing, wildlife safety, and current road conditions.
Spring (April to May)
Weather: variable, higher elevation areas still wintery
Pros: Fewer crowds, early season scenery on the lower elevation sections
Cons: The alpine portion of Going to the Sun Road is typically not open yet, and there is no fixed opening date
Best for: Quieter trips focused on Lake McDonald and lower elevation hikes
Summer (June to August)
Weather: Best overall access, but still cooler at elevation
Pros: The best chance for full park access; the road is typically fully open by early July
Cons: Crowds, parking pressure at Logan Pass, and restrictions can limit campervan routing
Best for: First time visitors who want iconic highlights, with an early start strategy
Autumn (September to mid October)
Weather: Crisp mornings, shorter days
Pros: Fewer crowds, strong hiking conditions
Cons: Parts of the road can close due to weather; it is typically fully open until the third Monday of October, but conditions can change quickly
Best for: Hiking focused trips with flexible day plans
Winter (late October to March)
Weather: Severe winter conditions at elevation
Pros: Quiet, dramatic landscapes
Cons: Limited road access; not a campervan friendly season for most visitors
Best for: Not recommended for standard campervan itineraries
Campgrounds inside the park
These are the high value, campervan relevant front country campgrounds to cover in detail. The park’s campground information includes site counts and maximum campervan or trailer lengths, which you should match to your vehicle before booking.
Campgrounds and caravan parks outside the park
Gateway towns can be a practical backup when in park sites are full, or when you want hookups. Focus on West Glacier and the St. Mary or Browning area as the most natural bases, depending on which side you want to start each day.
Dump stations
Dump stations are not optional planning at Glacier because services are spread out and many campgrounds are dry camping.
Only if your campervan fits the size limits. Vehicles longer than 6.4 m or wider than 2.44 m are prohibited between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun.
Plan to park and use the free shuttle system to reach Logan Pass and key stops. Shuttles run in summer, are free, and are designed to reduce parking pressure.
Policies can change year to year. In 2026, a timed entry vehicle reservation was required for specific areas during set hours and dates, in addition to your entrance pass, and reservations were handled through Recreation.gov. Always check the current rules for your travel year before you arrive.
In 2025, timed entry reservations applied to the west side access of Going to the Sun Road beyond the Apgar checkpoint and to the North Fork during the posted summer date range and hours.
There is no set date. The park notes it is typically fully open by early July, but the opening depends on snowfall and plowing conditions.
Apgar, Fish Creek, St. Mary, Many Glacier, and Two Medicine are the most commonly used developed options for campervan travellers. Confirm maximum length limits and your exact site type before booking.
Most in park campgrounds are dry camping. Plan on water and dump station logistics rather than full hookups as your default.
Plan around seasonal dump stations associated with developed campgrounds, and keep a gateway town caravan park as a backup for a paid dump if needed.
Two to three days works for a highlights trip if you plan your driving carefully. Four to five days is better if you want to add Many Glacier hikes, Two Medicine, and some quieter time beyond the main corridor.
Avalanche Lake is a strong first choice from the west side, Hidden Lake Overlook is the classic Logan Pass hike, and St. Mary Falls is a high reward waterfall walk on the east side.
