Canyonlands splits into three districts carved by the Green and Colorado rivers: the mesa-top Island in the Sky, the remote Needles, and the roadless Maze. Willow Flat (Island in the Sky) has no hookups. Indie Campers’ Salt Lake City depot is about four hours / 370 km away, and the park pairs naturally with Arches just outside Moab.
Getting the right vehicle is half the battle. A successful desert trip depends on it. The park roads are paved and well-maintained, but parking at popular overlooks like Grand View Point gets tight by mid-morning. A nimble rig is essential for navigating the park while still being equipped for off-grid comfort.
Our fleet is built for this. We recommend our Standard or Compact class vehicles for Canyonlands. They’re under 7.62 m, so they're easy to drive and park, but they still come fully equipped with a kitchenette, sleeping for up to four, and the essential water tanks you’ll need. Our Salt Lake City depot is your best starting point. It's a straight shot of about 377 km down US-6 E to Moab: a classic Western drive that demands a good playlist and a bag of beef jerky. You can pick up your rig, gas up in the city, and be setting up camp by evening. Plus, every hire comes with unlimited kilometres. Explore Arches, Dead Horse Point, and the scenic byways around Moab without watching the odometer. Our 24/7 support team is always on call, giving you real peace of mind when you’re in a place with notoriously spotty cell service.
Canyonlands is a driver's park. But not all drives are created equal, especially in a campervan. The Maze? Strictly off-limits to hire campervans. Even The Needles requires a long, dedicated drive. For 99% of campervan travellers, the entire park experience is centred on one place: the Island in the Sky district.
Island in the Sky Scenic Drive (UT-313)
This is the main event. It's a 54.7 km (return trip) paved road following the mesa rim, with one viewpoint after another. Plan on half a day, minimum. A full day is better if you plan to hike. Key Stops: Shafer Canyon Overlook, Mesa Arch, Green River Overlook, Buck Canyon Overlook, Grand View Point. Approx Drive Time: 2-3 hours without stops. Realistically, 4-6 hours with stops and short walks. Best Time to Go: Early morning (before 9 a.m.) to secure parking at Mesa Arch and Grand View Point. Late afternoon light is also spectacular. campervan Notes: All pullouts and car parks are accessible to campervans under 9.14 m. The road is wide and in excellent condition. There are no steep grades or tight switchbacks on the main scenic drive.
Upheaval Dome Road
This 8.05 km spur road off the main scenic drive leads to a massive, mysterious crater. The geology is fascinating. The short hike to the two overlooks is well worth it. Key Stops: Upheaval Dome Overlooks. Approx Drive Time: 20 minutes return trip from the main road. * campervan Notes: The parking area at the end can accommodate campervans, but it's smaller than the main viewpoint lots. The first overlook is a strenuous 0.48 km uphill walk.
Let's be clear. Your options for camping inside Canyonlands National Park are limited. They're rustic. And they are highly competitive. For most RVers, the best strategy is to camp in or around Moab, using your campervan as a mobile base for day trips into the park.
Inside the Park
Outside the Park (Moab and vicinity)
This is where you'll find amenities. Moab has a dozen private caravan parks, and there are numerous BLM campgrounds nearby.

Timing your visit to Canyonlands is critical. The high desert environment means extreme temperatures and weather patterns that can make or break your trip.
Spring (March to May): This is prime time. Seriously. Temperatures are pleasant, typically ranging from 60-26.7 °C during the day, and wildflowers can even bloom in April, adding spots of colour to the desert landscape. The downside? It's also the busiest season, so you have to expect crowds and book campgrounds far in advance.
Summer (June to August): It gets dangerously hot. Daytime temperatures consistently exceed 37.8 °C, and there is little to no shade on the mesa top. Violent afternoon thunderstorms (monsoons) can also roll in quickly, causing flash floods. If you visit in summer, do all your hiking and exploring early in the morning or late in the evening. Your Campervan's A/C will be essential.
Autumn (September to October): Fall is ideal. Just like spring. The brutal heat of summer finally breaks, and the daytime temperatures become perfect for hiking. The cottonwood trees along the rivers turn a
Yes. Indie Campers’ Salt Lake City depot is about 4 hours (370 km) north; Las Vegas is a longer haul. Most campervan trips base in Moab, 30–40 minutes from the Island in the Sky entrance and next to Arches.
Island in the Sky — its paved mesa-top road and overlooks (Grand View Point, Mesa Arch) are the most campervan-friendly. The Needles is a longer paved drive with tighter campgrounds, and the Maze is 4WD-only, not for campervans.
This is a commitment. The Needles district entrance is about 121 km (1.5 hours) from Moab, one way. The drive itself, especially along UT-211, is a designated scenic byway that cuts through red rock country, passing Newspaper Rock Petroglyph Panel. It’s a fantastic day trip from Moab if you have the time. Key Stops: Newspaper Rock, The Needles Visitor Center, Big Spring Canyon Overlook. Approx Drive Time: 3 hours return trip from Moab, plus time inside the park. * campervan Notes: The road is paved all the way to the visitor centre and campground. Roads within The Needles are tighter, and the campground has a 8.53 m length limit on some sites. It’s doable, but requires more careful driving than Island in the Sky.
Willow Flat at Island in the Sky (12 sites, no hookups, no water) and Squaw Flat in the Needles take small-to-mid campervans. For hookups, stay in Moab and day-trip into the park.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). Summer highs regularly exceed 37.8 °C with no shade on the mesa, and there is no water at Island in the Sky, so carry your own.
