Acadia wraps the granite coast of Mount Desert Island in Maine, with the Park Loop Road, Jordan Pond and sunrise from Cadillac Mountain. Schoodic Woods has electric/water hookups; Blackwoods and Seawall take campervans without hookups. Indie Campers' Boston depot is about a five-hour drive up the coast.
Choosing the right vehicle for Acadia isn't about luxury. It's about logistics. Some of the park’s roads are narrow and campground loops can be tight, which is why Indie Campers focuses on maneuverable, efficient campervans that fit where the big Class A rigs simply can't.
Our Boston depot is your starting point. It's about 451 km, a five-hour drive south of the park entrance. The drive itself is part of the experience, especially if you take the scenic coastal US-1 route. All our hire come with unlimited kilometres so you can explore every byway without watching the odometer, and with 24/7 roadside support, you have a team behind you from downtown Boston to the quiet roads of the Schoodic Peninsula.
For Acadia, we recommend our Standard or Compact vans. They are nimble. They fit anywhere. They can handle the twists of the Park Loop Road and slide into any campsite in the national park, giving you maximum flexibility. A 10.7 m motorhome might sound comfortable, but it's a liability when you're trying to snag a parking spot at Jordan Pond House.
Acadia’s roads are destinations in themselves. They are engineered to reveal the landscape, and you’ll want to drive them more than once.
Park Loop Road
This 43.5 km loop is the park's main artery. For good reason. It connects the primary sights on the eastern side of Mount Desert Island, so you should plan on at least three to four hours to do it justice, and even more if you're hiking. The section from the visitor centre to Otter Cliff is one-way. Key stops include Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliff, Jordan Pond, and the turnoff for Cadillac Mountain. Campervans are welcome, but be warned: parking at the most popular lots like Sand Beach and Jordan Pond fills by 9 a.m. in the summer. Get an early start. Or use the free Island Explorer shuttle bus.
Cadillac Summit Road
This 5.63 km road is your ticket to the highest point on the North Atlantic seaboard. The views are staggering. But you can't just show up. From late May through mid-October, you need a timed vehicle reservation, which you can book online at Recreation.gov. They cost $6 and are released in two blocks: 30% are released 90 days in advance, and the remaining 70% are released at 10 a.m. ET two days ahead. Crucially for campervan drivers, there is a vehicle length restriction of 7.62 m for the summit road. Check the NPS website for the current year's rules before you go.
Schoodic Loop Road
Most visitors stick to Mount Desert Island. They never see the Schoodic Peninsula. This is a mistake. About an hour's drive from Bar Harbor, this is the only part of the park on the mainland, and its six-mile, one-way Schoodic Loop Road is quieter, wilder, and offers dramatic views of crashing surf on granite headlands. It's an easy drive for any size campervan. The Schoodic Woods Campground here is the most modern in the park.
This is the most important rule. You cannot simply pull over and camp for the night in Acadia National Park. Overnighting is only allowed in designated campgrounds, and they book up months in advance. Dispersed or "wild" camping is strictly prohibited.
Outside the park, numerous private caravan parks with full hookups are available in the towns of Bar Harbor, Trenton, and Southwest Harbor.
Your experience in Acadia will be dramatically different depending on the season. Pick the one that fits your tolerance for crowds and your love for fall colours.
Summer (June to August): This is peak season. The weather is warm, everything is open, and the park is buzzing with activity. It's also incredibly crowded. Expect traffic on the Park Loop Road and full car parks. You'll need to book campsites and Cadillac Mountain reservations months in advance. If you visit in summer, your strategy is simple: get up early and stay out late, using the middle of the day for less popular activities.
Autumn (September to October): Many consider this the best time to visit. The crowds thin out after Labour Day, the air is crisp, and the autumn foliage is spectacular, usually peaking in mid-October. Most park facilities remain open through Columbus Day. The weather can be more unpredictable, but a sunny autumn day in Acadia is hard to beat.
Spring (May): A quiet time to visit as the park awakens from winter. You'll have many trails to yourself. However, some facilities may not have opened for the season, and the infamous black flies can be a nuisance in late May and early June.
Winter (November to April): Acadia in winter is a stark, quiet, and beautiful place. Most of the Park Loop Road is closed to vehicles. It is, however, open to snowshoers, cross-country skiers, and winter hikers. Services are very limited. Bar Harbor is mostly shut down. This is a trip for the self-sufficient traveller who is seeking true solitude.
Booking a campsite in Acadia requires planning and a bit of luck. The demand far outstrips the supply, especially for the few sites with hookups.
