Campervan Rental Geneva

The people of Geneva have nothing to envy from the dolce vita of their Italian neighbors. Indeed, the summer is very mild and peaceful. With the La Grange Park, the Eaux-vives park, or the Perle du Lac park, the inhabitants of the Swiss city have many green spaces to relax in. However, the most popular place for visitors is the famous 140-meter high water jet on the lake.

Geneva also has a rich history that holds many secrets. It is possible to visit any number of museums to trace the city's past. For example, the Patek Philippe Museum pays tribute to this wristwatch designer. It was in the city where the first wristwatch was developed in 1868. This was the beginning of a long love affair between Switzerland and luxury watches.

Getting to Geneva

The Swiss city is wedged between the mountains to the south and Lake Geneva to the north, which limits road access. However, the A40 and A41 motorways provide direct access for those with a motorhome rental in Geneva from the south. To the north, the European E62 is the main road. These access conditions lead many visitors to prefer using the train. With its 720 daily shuttles, the Geneva-Cornavin train station is the third-largest in Switzerland. Geneva airport, meanwhile, provides access to travelers from further afield. Air France, British Airways and easyJet all travel there. This airport has the added bonus of offering a free transport link to the city center for passengers.

Parking in Geneva

The city has no shortage of car parks, where you can leave your vehicle all day with complete peace of mind. In the city center, the Parking du Mont-Blanc charges £2.50/€2.90 per hour. In addition, the plaine de plainpalais car park offers a progressive rate. The first hour costs only one franc, however, as time goes by, the rates increase exponentially. Further out, the Mérin-Gravière and Etoile car parks (Park & Ride) offer parking near public transport lines. An hour's parking costs an average of £1.50/€1.75.

Annual events in Geneva

  • Les Aubes Musicales (The Musical Dawns) at the Bains des Pâquis (June to September): Free concerts are held in front of the lake every Sunday from 6 to 7 am to enjoy the sunrise.
  • The climbing festival (December): Three days to celebrate mountain climbing and the town's victory over the invading French in 1602.
  • The Open Winecellars (May): During this day, Geneva's winegrowers offer tastings and visits to their estates.
  • The International Fine Watchmaking Exhibition (March): The most famous watch brands are exhibited here. Admission costs around £55/€64.
  • Le Bol d'Or Mirabaud (June): This is the largest sailing boat race in an enclosed nautical area. Participants must sail 123 kilometers on the waters of Lake Geneva.

Weather graph for average temperatures in Geneva
Average temperatures in Geneva per month

With its proximity to Lake Geneva and the Alps, the Swiss city has a prime location within the heart of Europe. Although winters are harsh and snow is omnipresent at that time of year, Geneva's climate is rather temperate. The seasons are quite distinct in this beautiful Swiss city.

The contrast between Geneva's summers and winters is stark. In winter, average temperatures can fall to -1°C, especially in January and February. Moreover, it tends to be frozen over for several weeks at this time, with only short periods of sunshine that doesn’t encourage a return to normal temperatures. July, on the other hand, with its average temperature of 20°C, gives way to rather warm and pleasant summers perfect for campervan rental in Geneva. In general, these summer temperatures mean swimming in Lake Geneva, with its frosty alpine run-off water, for the braver folk.

The summer conditions attract many visitors each year. In fact, although July and August are very busy, they remain the best months to rent a RV in Geneva. The temperatures are very pleasant and rainfall is less frequent. July also offers an average of 10 hours of sunshine per day. This is a good opportunity to enjoy the city center, the lake, and its surroundings.
