Campervan Rental Essen

Essen is one of the most important cities in the metropolitan region of Rhein-Ruhr. The times of steel, coal, and soot are gone for good, but they have not been forgotten: In the Ruhr Museum Essen you may discover the city’s past and its development from the times of the coal and steel industry until today. Meanwhile, Essen is a modern city offering many diverse cultural sites, events, and happenings. The “Unperfekthaus” might be representative of that: artists show their splendid creativity on 4000 m2 and visitors can view this “Künstlerdorf” (village of artists) up close. In contrast to art, culture, and the many events the Ruhr and its natural surroundings offer idyllic opportunities for RV rental in Essen, relaxing away from the urban hustle and bustle: you may go for a bike ride or a stroll along the river Ruhr, in the Wambach Valley or in the Cologne Forrest.

Getting to Essen

Get to your camper rental in Essen directly via the Autobahn A40, A42, and A52. If you prefer traveling by train: no problem – the main train station in Essen daily hosts more than 100 IC and ICE trains that come from all directions. Unfortunately, scheduled flights or tourist charters do not fly to the airport Essen-Mülheim. However, you may book a flight to the airport of Düsseldorf. It is frequented by numerous carriers such as Lufthansa, Eurowings, TUIfly, Condor, or EasyJet. From there, you may continue traveling to Essen with the regional or long-distance train in less than 20 minutes.

Parking in Essen

In theory, you may park with your RV rental in Essen for up to 14 days, anywhere you can also park a car. However, it might be difficult to find a sufficiently large parking space in the center of the city. The exception is the camper parking space Essen, located nearest to the center of the city in the Baedeker Straße. Here you can park all year long for €9 per day. As an alternative, you will find the Revierpark Nienhausen about a 9 km distance where you can park for €7 per day. Still further outside the city, there is the RV car park at the Landhaus Grum for €15 a day or the camper park at the Freizeitpark Aquarell for €11 per day.

Annual Events in Essen

  • Pentecost Open Air (May/June): Festival in Essen-Werden with rock and Indie music as well as electronic music. Free admission.
  • SMAG Sundance Open Air (June): Festival at the lake Baldeney, alternating line-up, and several stages. Ticket prices from €38 with advance booking.
  • Parkleuchten (park lights) in Essen (February-March): In the Gruga Park, thousands of walkways, trees, and bushes will be lit up in beautiful colors. Free admission.
  • “Extraschicht”-culture festival (last Saturday in June): With 50 annually alternating stages in the Ruhr region, also in Essen, tickets from €12 for advance booking, after that about €20.

Camping in Essen

  • Camping grounds “Horster Ruhrbrücke”: Close to nature with neat sanitary facilities. Without water and power supply at the grounds, it is, however, very affordable for €10 per day.
  • Camping Park “Baldeneysee”: Located at the lake, vast forest, and grassland areas. With sanitary facilities and power supply at the park. Parking space from €11/night, directly at the lake €14.
  • Camping at the “Freizeitdomizil Entenfangsee”: With own lot close to the woods, power and fresh water supply, and wastewater connection available at the car park, also WLAN and gas supply. Lots from €10.50 per day.

The best time to rent a RV in Essen

Weather graph for average temperatures in Essen
Average temperatures in Essen per month

The moderate climate of Central Europe dominates the weather in Essen, making it the perfect place to rent a RV. July is the warmest month of the year, featuring an average temperature of 19.7 0C, closely followed by the month of August with an 18.9 0C average temperature. Precipitations in Essen are happening over the entire year. Summer months are drier than usual, from April to June in particular. To no surprise, most festivals and events are happening during this time, and to rent a camper in Essen is certainly worthwhile. It is likely that the weather will play along – and you also are going to have plenty of fun. In Essen, it is coldest in January averaging 3.4 0C, and in February averaging 4.5 0C. But despite the chilly weather, there is still plenty to do in Essen. You may enjoy “Essen on Ice” – winter magic on the Kennedy Platz, and especially celebrating Mardi Gras – the entire Ruhr area is famous-notorious for its carnival – all that is worth a visit. If you like it quieter, you will love the Weeks of Lights in Essen, transforming the center of the city into a sea of lights in a Christmassy atmosphere.

April, September, and October are the most active months for tourists and RV rental in Essen. During those times, the city is more crowded, and prices are higher. Compared to that, November is the quietest and the most reasonably priced month. Noteworthy events might be conventions and trade shows. In that case, it might be hard to find available parking spaces. Therefore, we advise you to make reservations for your parking in advance if you travel during those busy times.
