Campervan hire Florence

From the Medici championing the arts, to Verrocchio making champions out of artists like Da Vinci, the cradle of the Renaissance is Italy’s biggest source of inspiration – and the most inspiring start of your road trip!

Back in the day, if Rome was known for its unmeasurable power, Florence was and is all about culture. From paintings and sculptures to the most unbelievably advanced architecture, Florence makes it hard to believe it is an ancient city. Established in 59 BC by the one and only Julius Caesar, this city never settled since, slowly evolving year after year until it reached its cultural apogee in the 15th century with the Italian Renaissance. If you’re planning to hire a campervan and travel to this pool of inspiration, there’s much more to dive in, beyond high culture. The bars and restaurants will make you fall in love with Tuscany’s gastronomy, the nightlife is going to transform you into a true noctivagant, and Florence’s incredible sites, like Piazza della Signoria and Ponte Vecchio, will make you forget you still have a whole campervan adventure ahead of you!

Practical Information

Depot + Transfer

If you want to hire a campervan or motorhome in Florence, we’re right there for you. We’ll meet you at Aeroporto di Firenze-Peretola, where you can pick up and drop off your RV – free of charge in regular hours, of course!

Parking in the city

Florence’s inner city is not very accessible for campervans. The few parking lots out there cost a minimum of €20 a day. Street parking comes at €2 or €3 per hour, from 8 am until 8 pm (excluding weekends).

Maybe your best choice is to park your van outside the city and taking public transportation to the centre. Alternatively, find a good and comfortable camping ground that covers all your needs.

Camping grounds nearby

Near Florence you’ll find a few good camping grounds. Camping Firenze is one of them, as well as Camping Village Panoramico Fiesole. There’s also a motorhome parking called Elite Club Vacanza Florence.

About Florence

Florence might be the city with most stories to tell. Why’s that? The capital city of Tuscany was established by the Romans (who else, right?), became a European trade and finance centre in the middle ages and then…the Medici took charge. It was in this time that history was made. Creativity was all around in this period, when culture and entertainment took over the city forever. Great names related to art appeared in this city and ruled the world in this matter: Verrocchio, Botticelli, Perugino and, of course, Leonardo Da Vinci!

If you decide to rent an RV in Florence, park it nearby and take a walk on the streets that inspired these artists to make history; take a picture of the most beautiful dome in Europe, the one of Florence’s 600-year-old cathedral; admire the oldest and best known bridge in the city, Ponte Vecchio, with shops and lots of magic from other times; visit Palazzo Medici with its Renaissance façade and rusticated stone walls that are still true to its original owners, the powerful Medici family; enjoy the best sight of this city at the Piazzale Michelangelo; have a taste of the best Tuscan dishes at lunch, like Pecorino cheese, Panzanella (bread salad) or Pappa al pomodoro; pay a visit to the mighty David, he rocks (didn’t get the joke?? You’ll like the statue better, for sure!); and have a delicious gelato while you’re at it! There are so many things to do here that it’s hard to believe this city will only be one of the many stops you’ll do on your road trip.

What to discover

In and around the city

Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo)

It might be a bit mainstream, but that’s because it’s a must go! Construction of this UNESCO World Heritage Site started in 1296 and was completed 170 years later.

The cathedral complex includes 3 buildings and is the proud owner of unique frescos and other pieces of art that are spread along this huge church.

Giotto's Campanile

If you play video games, you should know this tower from Ezio’s jumps in Assassin’s Creed 2. If you don’t, well, this is still one level ahead of any other monument.

Also, its gothic architecture takes this 84,7 tall tower to new creative heights with panels that tell some of mankind's most enlightened stories, from the creation of man and woman to the use of medicine.

Museo Galileo

If you love history, science and technology this museum will make you geek out. Here, you’ll see one of the major collections of scientific instruments from the Medici Era, and also a lot of Da Vinci’s instruments, machines and annotations.

Recommended locations

Perugia

This university city is a sweet spot to stop your campervan for a while. Why’s that? Because, despite having great historic buildings and monuments, one of the major attractions this city has is the Baci chocolate factory.

No need to hire a campervan in Perugia. Instead, get yourself a treat by driving 2 hours from Florence and going on a tour!

Siena

Whatever you’re planning on doing, Siena has it all––and it’s only a 1,5 hour campervan drive away. Want to see the sights and take great pictures? The wide Piazza del Campo and the medieval cathedral are there for you to visit. A wine tasting & tour? Go to the Poggio Rubino Winery. Street markets are also a thing on Wednesdays. Or if history is your thing, visit the museums all week long!

Instead of a campervan hire in Siena, pick up your Indie van in Florence and make your way to sightly Siena.

Rimini

It’s a 3-hour drive from Florence with one of our Indie campervans. That said, why is a campervan hire in Rimini worth it? Well, let us ask you the following: is a 15km-beach in the Adriatic Sea a good enough reason for you? Or a place full of remains of a Roman presence? We thought so.
